Food Packaging Solutions for a Better Planet
Stand G37 at the Packaging Innovations Show
NEC, 28 Feb – 1 March
So far 2018 has been a big year for the packaging industry. There were major announcements in January that had the potential to signal a new era in the way brands package their goods. One of these featured in a a speech given by Theresa May in which she aligned with the EU Plastics Strategy and declared war on plastic waste, with proposed policies including plastic-free aisles in supermarkets and a tax on takeaway containers. The Prime Minister set out her ambition to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste within 25 years and promised the UK would lead internationally on environmental issues. While plastic has a valuable role to play in society, action needs to be taken to ensure that the amount of plastic packaging waste is dramatically reduced.
The Alexir Partnership has been working collaboratively with their customers and their suppliers for a long time now to devise pack formats for the food industry that are better for the planet. One of these formats won Cartonboard Pack of the Year category at the prestigious UK Packaging Awards. This was the Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference tomato punnet which is a cartonboard alternative to the APET tray. It may not be completely plastic-free but it replaces the black tray and is a step in the right direction.
Another pack in the running in the war against plastics is the Halopack® by Alexir. The Halopack®is a board-based MAP capable food tray and is produced from sustainable cardboard. It is also designed to extend the shelf life of daily fresh food over conventional carton-board tray options due to an extensive EVOH barrier, thus reducing food wastage. The cardboard packaging has a patented design that is fully sealable with a unique inline production system for optimal conservation of the packed product. The Halopack® is one of the most rigid, hermetically sealed board trays in the retail market. M&S was the first retailer to use the innovative packaging format in the UK and it gives the ready meal fish dishes and the pre-cooked chicken range real stand-out on shelf against other more common packaging formats.
We will also be showing a new addition to the ‘Better Planet’ range at Packaging Innovations. The Alexir Partnership and Delipac have worked together to create a selection of pack formats from their sustainable fully-recycled barrier board. The barrier packaging board is engineered to replace pe/plastic laminated barrier food packaging material and is both freezable and ovenable.
The Alexir Partnership are exhibiting at the Packaging Innovations Show 28 February – 1 March at the NEC on stand G37. They will be showcasing their portfolio of carton board based packaging on a new eco-friendly stand. Click here to register for the show.
