Friday, 5th of June, is World Environment Day which encourages worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.
This year, the UN has chosen biodiversity as its theme to demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life, in which they exist. Biodiversity is a scientific measure of the variety of species, habitats and ecosystems across the planet, and is the foundation that supports all life on land and below water. Human actions, including deforestation, intensified agriculture, and acceleration of climate change, have pushed nature beyond its limit. It is also no secret that plastic waste has been a key aspect of the environmental agenda for years and negatively impacts biodiversity.
According to a statement by ECMA (European Carton Makers Association) folding cartons contribute strongly to some of the key focus areas of ‘World Environment Day’ including:
1. Understand, value and disclose your impact and dependency on nature: The carbon impact of folding cartons reduced by 9% between 2015 – 19.
2. If your business requires raw material, responsibly source through certifications like Forestry Stewardship Council: 90% of the wood use by the European pulp and paper industry is from within the European Union whilst European forests have been growing by the equivalent of 1500 football pitches every day.
3. Incorporate sustainability concerns at the earliest stages of planning: Folding cartons are sustainable, recyclable and made from renewable fibre; the recycling rate of paper packaging is 85%, the highest of any packaging material.
Sustainability is very important to The Alexir Partnership and we are recognised in the carton industry for being at the forefront of food packaging for a sustainable planet.
We source sustainable materials
Since 1989, we have primarily used carton board in all of our packaging. Cartons are the best option for packaging because they are recyclable, renewable, biodegradable, compostable and they contribute to producing energy from waste.
Sustainable Packaging
The primary function of packaging is to protect goods whilst in transit, storage and distribution. As food waste is a global challenge, we are committed to minimising food waste by using materials, mainly carton board, that extend shelf life and protect food quality.
Waste Reduction
We recycle all excess carton board and other recyclable materials. Additionally, we use LED lighting, have solar panels and encourage employees to have electric cars through the installation of charging stations in our parking lot.
The Octagonal HALOPACK® helps to reduce plastic, extends shelf life and allows for more branding opportunities. However, this HALOPACK® is unique as it removes the need for a square tool resulting in minimal impact to production lines.
